L’oeuvre de Geert Goiris est d’une grande puissance narrative et suggestive. Les paysages photographiés à travers le monde véhiculent le pressentiment d’une fin proche.

Geert Goiris présente ainsi ses dernières recherches : « Le monde sans nous est une expérimentation visuelle qui anticipe un monde sans humains, un monde que nous ne connaissons pas. Cela procède de la notion largement partagée que nous sommes une société en danger, marquée par l’extinction massive des espèces. Des informations alarmantes et contradictoires suscitent des perceptions anxiogènes. J’ai adopté une perception paranoïaque, celle de vivre la fin d’une ère. Mon objectif est de faire des photographies qui peuvent être comprises comme des spéculations. Elles ne sont pas strictement référentielles, mais font appel à notre imagination. Je combine ces images dans des expositions et des publications afin de mettre en mouvement cette oscillation entre le familier et l’aliénant."

Une partie des photos exposées au Musée des Beaux-Arts est issue de la collection du FRAC Alsace, l’autre est produite par la BPM 2020.  

Né en 1971 en Belgique, Geert Goiris vit et travaille à Anvers. En 2020, l’exposition Silent Earth, est visible à la Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation de Frankfurt. Il a aussi exposé à la galerie FOAM d’Amsterdam (2015), à la Hamburger Kunsthalle (2010) ou à Art Basel Statements (2009/2014). Il a participé a de nombreuses expositions collectives, notamment au MUHKA (Anvers), à la Galerie d’Art Moderne de Brisbane, au BOZAR de Bruxelles, au Palais de Tokyo (Paris). Son travail est présent dans de nombreuses collections à travers le monde. Le livre World Without Us est paru en 2019 chez ROMA Publications, Amsterdam. 


Geert Goiris creates powerful images, in which he combines an almost universal perception of beauty with a subtle frisson of danger. As well as being mental images, his photos are records of reality that generate room for stories, associations and suspense in the area of tension between fact and fiction.

"World Without Us is a visualisation experiment anticipating a world without humans, a world we do not know. It proceeds from the broadly shared notion that we are a society in danger, marked by massive species extinction.  Alarming and conflicting information give rise to anxious perceptions. Our imagined future is a narrative of hope, wonder or dread, and today’s opinion-forming powers tell us that the times to come will not look like the past. This affects our state of mind, our perceptions and premonitions.  I have adopted the paranoid perception of living at the end of an era. (…) My aim is to make images that can be understood as speculations: not strictly referential, but appealing to our imagination. I want to make photographs apart from realism, not things as they are, but as they can be, moving beyond the literal and the prosaic, but without abandoning the indexical qualities of the medium.  I combine these images in exhibitions and publications where they set in motion an open narrative oscillating between familiarity and alienation. » Geert Goiris

Since Reconstruction (Geert Goiris' first exhibition in the FoMu in Antwerp in 2000), solo exhibitions of Goiris' work have been held in FOAM Amsterdam (2015)  Hamburger Kunsthalle (2010) and during Art Basel (2009/2014). His work has also been included in various group exhibitions, such as in MUHKA, Antwerp, the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, BOZAR in Brussels, Palais de Tokyo in Paris. In addition, his photos feature in several international collections. In 2019, the monographic publication Geert Goiris - Lying Awake was published by Roma publications Amsterdam.
