Les autoportraits avec sa femme Françoise dans des chambres d’hôtel affirment la construction de l’image et témoignent de l’implication du photographe dans l’acte de prise de vue. Miroirs, fenêtres, reflets mettent en abîme la photographie comme acte de désir : désir de photographie et désir amoureux. Denis Roche donne de l’importance à ce qu’il nomme la montée des circonstances : « Juste avant et au moment où le photographe va faire sa photo. Que se passe-t-il pendant ce temps plus ou moins long qu’interrompt le déclic ? Le photographe tourne avec son appareil, il a l’impression que quelque chose va se produire ou peut-être pas… et puis la photo est prise… » Cette montée des circonstances témoigne du désir photographique, moteur de la création de Denis Roche.

À la fois photographe, poète, éditeur et théoricien de la photographie, Denis Roche (1937-2015) a commencé à exposer et à publier ses photographies en 1978, avec Notre antéfixe, qui fut l’une des références de ce qu’on a appelé, à sa suite, la « photo-autobiographie ». En 1980 il fonde, avec Gilles Mora, Bernard Plossu et Claude Nori, les Cahiers de la photographie. Mais c’est surtout avec La Disparition des lucioles, en 1982, recueil de textes sur l’acte photographique, qu’il attire l’attention de la critique. En 1999 il est exposé aux Rencontres d’Arles.  Denis Roche est représenté par la galerie Le Réverbère à Lyon depuis 1989.


Self-portraits with his wife Françoise in hotel rooms assert the structure of the image and vouch for the photographer’s involvement in the act of shooting. Mirrors, windows and reflections create a fragmented representation of photography like an act of desire: desire for a photograph and romantic desire. Denis Roche values what he calls escalation of circumstances: ‘Just before and just as the photographer is going to take his photo. What happens during this varying amount of time interrupted by the click? The photographer turns with his camera, he has the impression that something is going to happen or maybe not… and then the photo is taken…’ This escalation in circumstances demonstrates photographic desire, the driving force behind Denis Roche’s creation.

Denis Roche (1937 - 2015) was an editor, photographer, theorist and poet.  He created the collection Fiction & Cie and directed it at Editions Du Seuil for thirty years. In 1980, he founded « Les Cahiers de la Photographie » with Gilles Mora, Claude Nori and Bernard Plossu. In 1997, he received the Grand Prize from the City of Paris. Denis Roche has published some twenty books since "Récits complets" in 1963. His book, "Le boîtier de mélancolie", published by Hazan in 1999, received the Prix André Malraux. He began exhibit his photographs in 1978, with « Notre Antefixe », which was the first publication of what became known afterwards as « photo-autobiographie ». Numerous exhibitions then followed : In France Galerie Maeght, at l’Espace photographique de Paris, at Le Réverbère Lyon, gallery which is representing Denis Roche since 1989.
