Les archives de Paul-Raymond Schwarz, acheteur-prospecteur de coton pour les industries mulhousiennes, ont été déposées aux Archives de la Ville de Mulhouse. Parmi elles, se trouvent différents albums photographiques, attribués à Alfred Georges Engel, datant de 1904 et relatant un voyage en orient. De janvier à avril, après une arrivée à Port Saïd, le voyageur-photographe amateur parcourt différents pays. Le voyage en Orient représente alors un rite bourgeois. Dans ces albums, l'outil photographique donne à voir ce qui est différent chez l'autre et le catégorise, notamment par le biais de la légende. La photographie de l'Autre est à la fois document, objet de curiosité et de désir.


The archives of Paul-Raymond Schwarz, buyer and prospector of cotton for industries in Mulhouse, have been submitted to the Mulhouse town archives. There are different photography albums amongst them, by Alfred Georges Engel, dating from 1904 and covering a journey to the East. From January to April, after arriving in Port Said, the amateur traveller and photographer travelled through various countries. The eastern voyage represents a middle-class ritual. Through photography these albums reveal what is different in another and categorises it, in particular through the Titles. A photograph of the other is a document, as well as an object of curiosity and desire.
